Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Shelby Co. ALLEN BARNETT was born June 15, 1811, in Shelby County, Ky. His father, James Barnett, was a well-to-do farmer of Fluvanna County, Va., came to Kentucky in 1810, and settled in Shelby County. He married Joanna Shepperd, of Virginia. James was a son of John Barnett, who came from England and settled in Virginia, where he lived until his death, which occurred in 1876. Allen Barnett is one of the leading farmers of Shelby County and owns 450 acres of land in the county. He has been twice married, first, September 10, 1840, to Elizabeth Newton, daughter of Samuel and Drucilla (Agey) Newton, of Virginia. This union was blessed with three children: William, Sallie and Mildred. His second marriage occurred September 10, 1850, with Louisa Nash, daughter of Harmon and Sarah (Gates) Nash of this county. Five children were born to this second marriage: Sibbie, James, Mollie, Edgar and Atha. Mr. Barnett is a member of the Baptist Church. In December, 1886, he unfortunately broke one of his limbs, from the effect of which he has never fully recovered.
