Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Shelby Co. JOHN T. BALLARD, insurance and real estate agent, of Shelbyville, Ky., was born in Oldham County, January 6, 1834, and is a son of Camden M. and Lavina H. (Railey) Ballard, natives of Virginia. His maternal grandfather, Joseph Railey, came to Oldham County, about 1791. His father, Camden M. Ballard, was born in 1800, and came from Spottsylvania [sic] County, Va., to Oldham County, Ky., in 1820; was sheriff in 1837 and 1838, and sheriff of Henry County in 1840 and 1841; State senator from Oldham, Henry and Trimble from 1841 to 1851, and died March 3, 1853. John T. Ballard was educated at Masonic College, LaGrange, Ky., where he remained six or seven years, taking a classical course. From 1847 to 1849 he was deputy clerk under County Clerk W. D. Mitchell, of Oldham, and then went to Bedford, Trimble County, and was deputy under County Clerk W. T. Samuel for nearly two years. September 17, 1851, he removed to Shelbyville, Shelby County, served as deputy under William A. Jones, circuit clerk, one year, and then became deputy, under H. A. Chinn, county clerk; served until 1856, then became deputy sheriff, and in August 1858, was elected county clerk, which position he held twelve years. In 1870 he engaged in the real estate and insurance business with Fielding Neel (deceased) and To. O. Shackelford. In 1880 his son, Camden W., became his partner. This son also served as postmaster of Shelbyville from 1881 to 1885. On the 7th of September, 1854, John T. Ballard married Miss Effie, daughter of Fielding Winlock, who for many years was a merchant and police justice of Shelbyville, and who died in 1875. Of the children born to Mr. Ballard the following are living: Camden, Jr., Nannie Peyton, Lavina, Fielding M. and Florence. Mr. Ballard is a Republican and a Royal Arch Mason.
