THE ALLENS of SHELBY COUNTY During the reign of James VI of Scotland and of England, the four northern counties of Ireland were confiscated, the scottish subjects given the land for political reasons. Among these Scottish Presbyterians receiving lands in county Armagh, was the ALLAN family. Their descendants continued to live in county Armagh till 1736, when a James ALLAN was killed in an uprising against England. His widow and children, and his brothers Robert and John, came to the American colonies. They landed at Philadelphia, and lived for two years in Chester County, Pennsylvania. In 1738 they moved to Frederick County, Virginia, where Robert's family continued to live. John and his wife Mary went to Albemarle County, where their daughter Elizabeth was born. They were still living in Albermarle when Elizabeth married her first cousin, David Allan, fourth son of Robert Allan and his wife Deborah Montgomery. Robert ALLEN I, father of Maj. John Allen and Robert Allen II, and their brothers was born 1695 in Armagh, Ireland. He married Deborah MONTGOMERY in Armagh in 1730, and in 1736, came to Winchester, Frederick Co., Va. He married (2) Mrs Sarah GIVENS. Land grant: Among the Van Meter Grants in Frederick Co., Va. is one to Robert Allen I, May 21, 1742, for ??? acres on the south side of Opecquon Run. This tract was west from the Bartonville Section. In April 1744, we have the first mention of a jury in Frederick Co., and Robert I was one of the first jurors < see Cartwells Shenendoah Valley Pioneers> He died near Winchester, Frederick Co. Va. in 1769. His will was dated Sept. 19, 1765, and admitted to probate Aug. 1, 1769. Private Robert Allen I and his wife Deborah MONTGOMERY had the following children: 1. Maj. John Allen born in Armagh Co., Ireland, 1732, died in Frederick Co., Va., 1794. He married Ann Polick, later spelled POLK, in Carlisle, Pa. in 1760. Ann was born in 1743 and died in Shelby Co., Ky. 1805. Her parents are probably Dr. Thomas Pollock and Mary COCHRANE of Ireland.They had 9 children; -Robert Polk ALLEN, John ALLEN, Deborah ALLEN, Thomas ALLEN, Washington ALLEN, James David ALLEN, Ann ALLEN, Elizabeth ALLEN and Martha ALLEN. Ann and sons, Robert, John, Thomas and Washington were in Shelby Co., Ky. by 1795 when Robert purchased a 350 acre tract of land, this tract is included in the present day AllenDale Farm, still in the possession of Allen descendants. Ann lived there until her death in 1805. Washington Allen settled about eight miles from Shelbyville on the same road. Thomas and John Allen settled on adjoining tracts about ten southwest of Shelbyville on Plum Creek, near Plum Creek Church. The brothers married daughters of distinguished Williamsburg planter Joseph HORNSBY, who had brought his family to Shelby County about the same time as Ann and her family arrived. 2. Col. Thomas Allen, served throughout the Rev. War, and for Gallantry was presented with an award by his state. He was born in Armagh Co., Ireland in 1734, he settled in Warren Co. Va., married Abigail Miller in 1765. Died in Warren Co., Va. in 1822. Their daughter Deborah Allen married Gov. Robert Spottswood RUSSELL, of Lexington, Ky. Their granddaughter, Josephine Deborah Allen married John M. CLAY, youngest son of Hon. Henry Clay of Ky. A son of Col. Thomas Allen, David Hume Allen, married the eldest daughter of Col. Griffin TAYLOR, and their daughter Mary Catherine, married Gen. Carlos BUTTERFIELD. Another daughter, Frances Thornton Allen married Thomas Montague ISBELL, State Senator. David Hume Allen and his family lived at Clifton, an old Southern Mansion, at Gaylord, Clark Co., Va. The family has in its possession the old family bible, with many valuable records. 3. Robert Allen II born in Armagh, Ireland in 1736, died near Winchester, Frederick Co., Va. in 1791, married Martha, buried at Old Opecquon Church, Kearnstown, Va. He fought in the Rev. War as a private in the Continental Line, as shown in the Revolutionary Land County Records, on file in Richmond, Va. His son, Montgomery Allen, married his cousin, Martha Allen, daughter of Maj. John Allen. 4. Capt. David Allen was born at Frederick Co., Va. in 1738. He married in 1764, his cousin, Elizabeth Allen, daughter of John Allen. He died in 1783. David was Lieutenant in the Rev. War when captured at Charlestown. He served to the end of the war as Capt. He was a manufacturer. David Allen's son, David, was a Capt. in General James Allen's Company in the war of 1812. Another son, James Allen, was the first lawyer of Greensburg, Ky., a scholar and a statesman, and Brig. Gen. in the War of 1812. 5. Rebecca Allen was born in 1740, in Va. She married Capt. John GIVENS s/o Sarah, Robert's 2nd wife. He served in the Rev. War from Oct. 16, 1777 to Mar. 15, 1782 < see Gleanings of Virginia History by William Fletcher Boogher> Military Service: The following is on record in Court Order book N. N7, pg. 84. At a Court continued and held for Frederick Co. on Fri. the 4th day of June, 1786: "Present: The Right Honorable Thomas, Lord Fairfax, Thomas Bryan Martin, Thomas Van Swearingen and John Lindsey, Gentlemen Justices." "John Allen, sworn Lieutenant of the Malitia". The foregoing court order establishes the first military services of John Allen, which is on record in Frederick Co. Now comes the certified commission of this name John Allen, 18 years later, in 1774 as Major. The following of court minutes is recorded in Court Order book M? 16, pg. 366. "At a court held for Frederick Co. the 2nd day of August, 1774." "Present: The Right Hon. Thomas, Lord Fairfax, John Hite, Charles Lynn Thurston, Edmond Taylor, Warner Washington, Juniand Edward Snickers, Gentlemen Justices." "John Allen, Esquire, produced a commission from the Governor, appointing him Major of the Malitia, which being read, the said John Allen Esqr., took the usual oath to His Majesty's Person and Government, took the abdjuration oath, repeated and subscribed the test." John Allen served throughout the Revolutionary War as Major. In 1782, an order was entered to pay John Allen for four tons of hay. The order was as follows: At a court continued and held for Frederick Co. the 18th of May, 1782 " The Court proposes to resolve sundry claims of persons for property impressed or taken for public use, as follows, " To John Allen, for 8000 pounds of hay for Continental use, "State of Virginia." Major John Allen's grandson, married his cousin Deborah, a sister to Col. Jack Allen, of Nicauragua fame.
