Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, ed. 8-B, Rockcastle County Hon. Samuel Ward was born in Laurel County, Ky., June 18, 1843. His father, Reese B. Ward, a native of Wayne County, Ky., was born in 1821, has been a well-to-do farmer all his life, and now resides in Crab Orchard, Lincoln County, Ky. His wife, Nancy (McHargue) Ward, was born in Laurel County, Ky. They had eleven children, viz: Samuel, Tames, William, Alexander, Elizabeth, Mary J., Talitha A., Emeline, Richard G., Ellen and Sallie. Samuel Ward was reared on the farm and received a common school education. He has devoted a great deal of his time to mercantile pursuits in different parts of Kentucky. In 1880 he moved to Livingston, Ky, and has since been dealing largely in coal and lumber. In August, 1887, he was elected by the people of Rockcastle and Laurel Counties to represent them in the Legislature. December 8, 1863, he married Miss America Wheeler, a daughter of Abel and America (Emery) Wheeler, of Garrard County. To this union have been born four children, viz: Alice, Lura, Willey R. and Sammie. Mr. Ward is a member of the F. & A.M., also a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and in politics is a stanch Republican.
