Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, ed. 8-B, Pulaski County W.F. Scott, M.D., a native of Lincoln County, KY and son of Dr. John D. and Martha A. (Farris) Scott, was born March 7, 1828. John D. Scott was born in Garrard County, KY, and was regarded as one of the most able physicians of central Kentucky. He died in 1878, having been a member of the Presbyterian Church for many years, and a liberal contributor to all church and charitable organizations. He was a son of John Scott, and the latter was a son of John Scott, a native of Pennsylvania, who, with his wife, were early settlers of Jessamine County, KY, commencing life in the State with only nine-pence; he ran a ferry-boat across the Kentucky River at the mouth of the Hickman for several years, and at the time of his death was worth about $400,000. Martha A. (Farris) Scott was born in Lincoln County, KY, a daughter of William Farris, who was an extensive horseman. She was a direct descendant of the distinguished Owsley family of Kentucky, her mother being an Owsley. Dr. W.F. Scott was educated at Standford, KY, and in 1848 began reading medicine with Dr. Montgomery of that place and Dr. Reed, of Hustonville. He attended lectures at Transylvania University, Lexington, KY, and graduated in his chosen profession in 1850. He was chosen valedictorian of his class but declined the honor. He located in Somerset, Pulaski County, where he has since resided. He has a very successful and extensive business, and has the reputation of being one of the most skillful surgeons of southern Kentucky, having performed all the most difficult operations in surgery, including lithotomy, etc. In the fall of 1862 he enlisted in the Federal army, Thirty-second Kentucky Volunteer Infantry, as surgeon, serving in that capacity nine months. In December, 1858, the Doctor married Miss Margaret E. Bradley, an excellent and accomplished young lady, daughter of Robert M. and Ellen (Totten) Bradley, a sister of the noted orator, William O. Bradley, who was the late Republican nominee for Governor of Kentucky. R.M. Bradley was one of the most celebrated land lawyers and orators of his day in the State of Kentucky. Seven children have been born to Dr. and Mrs. Scott, only three of whom are living: Thomas M., Ethelbert D. and Samuel N. Dr. Scott and wife are members of the Baptist Church.
