Goodwin, a prominent merchant of Science Hill, Pulaski County, Ky., was born in Tazewell County, Va., June 19, 1853, and is a son of J. and Sarah (Carr) Goodwin. J. Goodwin. J. Goodwin, a native of Roanoke County, Va, was born in 1821 and has been a Methodist minister since he was twenty-five years old. He is a son of Enos Goodwin, also a native of Virginia. Sarah (Carr) Goodwin, was born in Giles County, VA, a daughter of William Carr, who was also a native of that State. W.J. Goodwin is the eldest of three children, viz: W.J., Mary M. Willis and Bettie. Mr. Goodwin received a good common school education, and he also taught school a few terms. He was connected with surveying corps on the Cincinnati Southern Railway for two years. In 1876 he commenced merchandising at Science Hill, where he has since resided. He started on a small capital but now has a larger stock and sells more goods than any other merchant in Pulaski County. In 1879 he was appointed railroad agent, which office he still retains. In 1880 he was appointed Postmaster, and still holds that office; he is also express agent. September 24, 1884, he married Miss Marietta Ingram, of Wayne County, Ky., a daughter of George W. and Lucinda (Cullum) Ingram. Of the two children which have blessed their union, only one is living, William I. Edward C. is deceased. Mr. Goodwin is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and is a Republican in politics. Mrs. Goodwin is a member of the Christian Church. Mr. Goodwin is a stockholder of the First National Bank of Somerset, of which he is one of the directors. He also is a stockholder in the First National Bank of Meridian, Miss; of the First National Bank of Lyons, Kan.; of the Burden Bank of Burden, Kan., and The American State of Salina, Kan..
