Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, ed. 8-B, Pulaski County James Denton was born in Pulaski County, Ky., one mile from Somerset, July 9, 1860, a son of Judge D.H. and Nancy W. (McKee) Denton. D.H. Denton was born in Garrard County, Ky., April 14, 1814. He was a lawyer for forty years, was county attorney of Garrard County. He was three times elected county attorney for Pulaski County, once before the war, and was twice elected after the war, and was county judge of Pulaski County in 1858, and served one term. He organized a company in the Third Kentucky Federal Infantry, of which he was Captain, but he only served in the war a short time, when he returned to Kentucky and was made provost marshal of Wayne County. He retired from practice in 1876, and has since resided on his farm three miles from Somerset. He is a member of the Presbyterian Church, as well as of the Masonic fraternity. His father was Henry Denton, and his grandfather, John Denton, was one of Daniel Boone's associates. Mrs. Nancy W. Denton was born in Garrard County, Ky., a daughter of David L. and Elizabeth (Letcher) McKee. James Denton received his education at the common schools and at the Masonic College, Somerset, Ky.. When but sixteen years of age he taught school. He read law with his father and was admitted to the bar in 1870. In November, 1883, he was appointed United States Commissioner, in which capacity he acted until July, 1885, when he resigned, and in August, 1885, was elected to the Legislature. He was a member of the Committee on Criminal Law and Codes of Practice, and also that on the State Prison, taking an active part in repealing the law which allowed convicts to be employed on public works, etc. April 17, 1884, Mr. Denton married Anna F. Goggin, of Pulaski County, a daughter of William F. and Kate (Higgins) Goggin. Mr. And Mrs. Denton are members of the Presbyterian Church, Mr. Denton being an elder in that church. Mr. Denton is also a Knight of Honor, and in Political preference is a Republican. He is now practicing his chosen profession as a partner of Capt. Will C. Curd.
