Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 7th ed., Owen Co. GEORGE W. SHIPP, physician and surgeon, was born in Owen County, Ky., April 17, 1861, and is a son of Thomas J. and Lydia (Baxter) Shipp, the latter a daughter of James Shipp, a Baptist clergyman of Owen County. Thomas J. Shipp was born in Owen County in December, 1827, and was a son of Henry Shipp. The latter, a native of Virginia, and a Baptist preacher, was born in 1795, and immigrated to Kentucky from Maryland. Thomas J. Shipp was reared and educated in Owen County, and was a farmer by occupation. He married Miss Lydia Baxter in 1858, and has four children: Maggie, J. H., Susie and George, of whom the youngest, George, the subject of this sketch, was reared and educated in Owen County. He read medicine with W. C. Dugan, M. D., at Anchorage, Ky., and attended lectures at Louisville Medical College, where he graduated February 25, 1887. In April of the same year he settled in Monterey, where he is engaged in the practice of his profession. Mr. Shipp is a Democrat, and is very popular.
