Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Oldham Co. JOHN SWAIN, M.D., an old and distinguished citizen of Ballardsville, Oldham Co., Ky., was born in Newburyport, Mass., March 4, 1808. His father, Edward Swain, also a native of Massachusetts, of Danish descent, was a captain in the East India trade, served in the United States Navy in the war of 1812, and was captured and imprisoned at Dartmoor, England, but was released at the close of the war in 1813. He married a Miss Sallie Davis, of New Hampshire, who became the mother of Dr. John Swain, who graduated at the high school in his native town in 1831. In the latter year John Swain began the study of medicine in Lowell, with Prof. Elisha Bartlett and Dr. Josiah Crosby. In 1833 he graduated from the medical department of Bowdoine, and began practice in Meredith, N. H. In the winter of 1837-38 he came to Kentucky and located at Ballardsville, where, with the exception of three years passed in Illinois, he has since resided, successfully engaged in the practice of his profession in Oldham and adjoining counties. While in Illinois he was elected president of the board of trustees for the town of West Urbana. He was formerly an influential member of the State Medical Society, also president of the County Medical Association, but of late years has withdrawn from duties so onerous. April 28, 1835, he married Miss Mary E. Stevens, a native of Charlestown, N. H., and daughter of the late Hon. Enos Stevens. This lady died May 27, 1884, leaving two surviving children: Dr. Enos Swain, of Smithfield, Henry Co., Ky., and Sallie, wife of Elijah Ray, of Ballardsville. Since 1840 the Doctor has been identified with the Masonic fraternity. His is postmaster at Ballardsville, and also proprietor of a farm of 212 acres near the town.
