Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Oldham Co. JOEL H. HARDIN was born in Oldham County, near where he now resides, December 18, 1838, the elder of two children born to Warner and Katherine (Hitt) Hardin, natives of Virginia, and the former a member of the well known Virginia family of that name. They were early settlers in Kentucky. Warner Hardin was a son of Henry Hardin and Mary (Allensworth) Hardin, of Virginia. Katherine Hitt was a daughter of Joel and Sallie (Keller) Hardin. Warner Hardin and Katherine Hitt were married March 22, 1838, in Oldham County, and had two children: Joel H., and James L. Warner Hardin died June 8, 1868, but his widow still survives him. Our subject was brought up on the farm, the pursuits of which he adopted as his vocation and has since followed. He now lives on the farm and in the house where his grandfather Henry Hardin, first settled in about 1790, and owns about 150 acres of land all well improved and in a high state of cultivation. He also owns a half interest in 4,000 acres of land in Wayne County. October 6, 1863, he was married to Fannie E. Coons, a daughter of John F. and Ann (Hancock) Coons, of Oldham County. To this union was born one child, James T. Mrs. Hardin died February 1, 1867, and June 25, 1868, Mr. Hardin married his second wife, Laura Hite, daughter of William and Elizabeth (Fishback) Hite, of Jefferson County. The children born to this union were named as follows: Leila, Warner, Elizabeth, Willie, Hittie and Laurena. Willie and Laurena are dead. Mr. and Mrs. Hardin are active members of the Christian church. Politically he is a Democrat. James Hardin, a brother of our subject, was killed in a wreck on the Louisville & Nashville Railroad, near Long Run, in Jefferson County, Ky., in 1880.
