Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Oldham Co. A. A. HAMPTON was born August 20, 1837, in Oldham County, Ky., to Joseph R. and Mary Ann (Stype) Hampton. His father came from North Carolina when a boy, and resided in Oldham County, Ky., until his death. The Hamptons are of English and Irish nationality, and are a branch of the family of which Gen. Wade Hampton is a member. Mrs. Mary Ann Hampton was born in 1810, is still living and has been a faithful member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South for more than sixty years. Her father, Christian Stype, was born in Germany, immigrated to Pennsylvania, thence to North Carolina where he died. A. A. Hampton followed farming pursuits until 1861, when he entered the Confederate Army from Tennessee for a term of ninety days. In 1862 he again enlisted, recruiting a company, and went out in Gen Morgan's command. While in the army he served for two years as engineer, superintending the construction of obstruction on Mobile Bay. He got out the timber for the last fort constructed at Old Spanish Fort, and surrendered at Cuba Station, Miss., in 1865. While in the engineer's department he took part in many of the wild and dangerous skirmishes incident to his work. In August, 1865, after his return from the service, he was untied in marriage with Miss Mary M., daughter of M. D. Speer, of Oldham County. The Speers are an old and leading family, and are of German-Irish ancestry. Mr. and Mrs. Hampton are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, Mr. Hampton being a member since he was twelve years old. He has also been Sabbath-school superintendent, and has taken an active part in church and Sunday-school work. He is the owner of 300 acres of valuable land in Ballardsville. Politically he is a Democrat. Hampton Stype Speer = NC PA Germany http://www.rootsweb.com/~kygenweb/kybiog/oldham/hampton.aa.txt
