Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Oldham Co. JOSEPH W. CARTER was born in Oldham County, Ky., July 21, 1846, a son of Stephen O. Carter, also a native of Oldham County, and Susan H. (Maddox) Carter, of Shelby County. The former was a Royal Arch Mason, and died in 1862; the latter was a member of the Missionary Baptist Church, and died in November, 1861. Of their three sons and one daughter, our subject is the second child. He lived with his father on his farm, and attended a country school until his father's death. He then made his home with his brother-in-law, J. W. Beall, for three years. In 1866 he entered Funk Seminary, LaGrange, where he remained ten months. He then taught school for some time in Chestnut Grove Precinct, Shelby County. He is now engaged in farming, having 300 acres of land in Brownsboro Precinct, Oldham County. He married, May 13, 1869, Miss Fannie Ingram, of Oldham County, daughter of William and Rebecca L. (Hitt) Ingram. To them have been born four sons and one daughter, James S., Roy, William S., Susie May and Ingram B.
