Used by permission. [Ohio] HIRAM PAYTON BROWN: As far as sacrificial and monumental labor is concerned none of the brethren have excelled the brother whose name appears at the head of this sketch. He was born in Ohio County, Kentucky, September 13, 1857. His opportunities for schooling were very few but he forged ahead in the face of difficulties and became a minister of the Gospel. His conversion took place in the year 1873 at the West Providence Church near where he was reared. This same church licensed him to preach on July 9, 1882, and ordained him on March 11, 1885. The presbytery at his ordination was composed of Brethren A. B. Smith, D. J. K. Maddox, J. T. Casebier, and E. H. Maddox. From the date of his ordination to his death he was the pastor of from one to four country churches. They were as follows: Cool Spring 1885-1890; Pond Run 1885-1890; Render 1888-1890 ; Walton's Creek 1893-1901; Nelson's Creek 1895-1902; Slaty Creek 1895; Mt. Carmel, Muhlenberg County, 1895-1902, also 1903-1915; Cool Spring 1897-1898; Independence 1898-1905, also 1908 and 1913; Island 1902-1908; Woodward's Valley 1902-1908; Central Grove 1905-1906, also 1911-1912; West Providence 1906-1910; Centertown 1909-1915; Small House 1911-1915; West Providence 1913-1915. Brother Brown was married to Miss Josephine Carter on August 14, 1884. Two daughters were born to this union. They, with their mother, still survive him and make their home in Beaver Dam, Kentucky. His death occurred on November 22, 1915, at the age of 58. He is buried in the West Providence cemetery. Bro. Brown worked at several missions stations in Ohio and adjoining counties besides his regular pastoral service. He literally burned out his life in serving the cause of Christ and His churches.
