[Nicholas County] [Carlisle City and Precinct] WILLIAM TELL HENRY, P. O. Carlisle, was born in Carlisle May 16, 1833; his father, Richard D. Henry, was born near Paris, April 5, 1804; died Dec. 7, 1874; he was for many years a resident of Carlisle, where he won the esteem of the people in his several avocations of cabinet making, mercantile pursuits, and farm life, also among the foremost in the village government; his early ancestry were from Ireland. The mother of our subject was Rhoda Ogden, daughter of Henry and Lucy (Metcalf) Ogden; she a sister go Governor Metcalf; she was born Oct. 15, 1810, and died Sept. 21, 1839. Richard D. by two marriages had five children: Louisa, died in early childhood; John, in the Mexican war at nineteen years of age, William Tell and George W., born Feb 18, 1836; second marriage to Mary Crenshaw, of Harrison County, and Henry Crenshaw. By her he had one child, Mary, born Aug. 29, 1842, now wife of Dr. G. W. Adair (see history). Mr. Henry received a limited education in the early Carlisle schools, and began life in 1855 in the furniture and undertaking business, in which he continued about ten years, then engaged in farming and trading, on account of his health, dealing largely in real estate and various other enterprises. On the 8th of Nov., 1855, in Nicholas County, he was married to Nancy T. Hall, who was born in Carlisle May 26, 1832. Her father, Robert C. Hall, was born in Virginia in 1783, and came with his father, Caleb Hall, to Bourbon County in 1793, after arriving at maturity, his opinions became of importance in the affairs of Nicholas County, on account of which he made Judge; also represented the same in the State Legislature. His wife was Frances Banton, of Garrard County, KY., daughter of John Banton, also a native of Virginia. Mr. Henry by this marriage had two daughters: Lizzie, who died at twenty-three years of age, and Fannie, now the wife of Hon. Thomas A. Webster, of Carlisle; he a son of Dr. Thomas A., of Green County, Ky. Our subject has been among the prominent men of the village and county, and during the late war was made Provost Marshal of Nicholas County, ill health keeping him from active duty at the front. He is a Republican in political faith, and with his family belong to the Presbyterian Church.
