WILLIAM M. WILLIAMS was born December 29, 1844, in Hawkins County, 
Tenn., and is the fifth of three sons and six daughters, all of whom 
lived to be grown, born to James and Frances (Arnot) Williams. James 
Williams was born and reared in Hawkins County, Tenn., and was a well-
to-do farmer; in 1857 he moved to Overton County, Tenn., where he 
remained until his death in 1872, at the age of about sixty-two years.  
He was a son of John Williams, who was born and reared in North 
Carolina; was one of the pioneers of Hawkins County, Tenn.; was an 
extensive farmer and slave holder, of English descent; his wife was of 
Irish origin.  Mrs. Frances Williams was born in Monroe County, Va., a 
daughter of William Arnot, who was born and reared in Pennsylvania; 
immigrated to Virginia; thence to Tennessee in 1815; was a farmer and 
one of the Revolutionary patriots, having served in a cavalry regiment. 
He died during the late war, at the age of ninety-seven years.  He was 
of English and his wife of Dutch descent.  William M. Williams was 
reared on a farm.  In 1863 he left home and came to Hartford, Ohio Co., 
Ky.; where he engaged in farming for three years; then commenced work at 
the carpenter and cabinet trades, which he has followed since with 
success. In 1867 he returned to Tennessee for one year; then he moved to 
Metcalfe County, Ky.; returned to Ohio County in 1874; thence to Summer 
Shade, Metcalfe County; in October, 1884, located in Fountain Run, where 
he erected a building, and opened a cabinet and undertaking shop.  He 
married, in June, 1864, Martha E. Stevens, of Ohio County, Ky., a 
daughter of Richard Stevens, of Ohio County. Richard was a farmer and a 
son of Henry Stevens, who emigrated from Maryland to Ohio County, Ky., 
in the early settlement of that county.  Mrs. Williams bore one son, 
Daniel B., and died May 30, 1866, a member of the Methodist Episcopal 
Church.  Mr. Williams married, as his second wife, Charlotte Tiensley 
[sic], of Ohio County, a daughter of Absalom and Mary (Kerns) Tiensley 
[sic], natives of Bedford County, Va.  Five children were the result of 
this second marriage, three of whom are living:  Imogene, Frank P. and 
Fannie.  Mrs. Williams is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.  
Mr. Williams is a Master Mason; in politics is a Republican, and cast 
his first vote for U. S. Grant.
