Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 3rd ed., 1886. Monroe County. THEODRIC TOOLEY was born October 16, 1836, in Monroe County, Ky. He is a son of Arthur and Elizabeth (Fitzgerald) Tooley, natives of Virginia, born August 24, 1791, and October 30, 1793, respectively, and married July 4, 1815. Arthur Tooley was a farmer. He died November 9, 1862; his widow survived until September 10, 1873. She left two daughters and seven sons, six of whom are now living, Theodric being the youngest: James, Isham, Mary (Copass), Lydia A. (Stephens), William and Theodric. Arthur Tooley was a son of William Tooley, a native of Virginia, where he lived and died. He was of German parentage. Theodric Tooley was reared on a farm, receiving a meager common school education, which he has improved very much by home reading, and his contact with the affairs of life has given him excellent business abilities. On the 6th of December, 1856, he was united in marriage with Dillie Hamilton, whose parents, Robert and Nancy Hamilton, were natives of Virginia, of English descent, and residents of Allen County. Theodric and Dilly [sic] (Hamilton) Tooley had ten children - seven of whom are now living - namely: Lucy, Nancy E., Sarah F., Phoebe T., Manderson, Amanda, Alice, Joseph, James and Thomas W. Mr. Tooley was appointed sheriff of Monroe County in 1877, and elected to the office the same year, and re-elected in 1878, and again in 1880. He served as a peace officer six years; was elected to the office of county court clerk in 1882, which position he now holds, and has given good satisfaction to his constituents throughout his official career. Although not a member of any church he is a firm believer in the Christian religion. In politics he is a Democrat, and is a strong advocate of the temperance cause, both by example and precept. He has served his county as a soldier; was a member of Company H, of the Ninth Kentucky Infantry (in which he held the rank of sergeant) from October 25, 1861, to February, 1865, and was in the general engagements at Shiloh, Mission Ridge, Stone River, Perryville, Allatoona, and many others. He was always found in the line of duty, and received an honorable discharge at the close of the war.
