RAY was born May 25, 1839, in Monroe County, Ky., where he was reared to manhood, and has always resided. His father, John Ray, Jr., a native of South Carolina, was born April 26, 1795; removed in 1801 with his parents, and located on Peter's Creek in Barren (now Monroe) County, Ky., where he died in 1878. He was a minister in the Reformer's Church, for many years. He as the son of John Ray, Sr., an Englishman. John Ray, Jr., married Anna, daughter of Aaron and Hannah (Howard) Hayes, of Monroe County (born September, 1797, died in 1881), and from their union sprang Priscilla (Harlan), Avery, Samuel, Emily (Chism), Sarah (Harlan), Harlan, John (died in army), Nancy J. (Harlan), Silas (died in army), and Newton M. The last named obtained a common English education, has supplied himself with a good library, and is a reading man. He married, September 27, 1866, Virginia, daughter of David and Eliza (Trice) Biggerstaff, of Clay County, Tenn., born December 28, 1838, and to them have been born Everett C., Herschel B., Samuel B. D. and Charles S. Mr. Ray engaged in merchandising for five years, in which he met with encouraging success. He is a farmer, having 430 acres of productive and well improved land, in good condition, and in a fine state of cultivation. His barn is a model of its kind and his dwelling house now being constructed will be among the best in the county. He is a member of the A. F. & A. M., also a member of the Reformers' Church, and in politics is a Democrat.
