MITCHELL was born December 29, 1858, in Monroe County, Ky., where he grew to manhood, and now resides. His father, Joseph D. Mitchell, was born March 29, 1831, in Hawkins County, Tenn., where he resided until 1856, when he moved to Monroe County, Ky., where he has since resided. He was a son of John Mitchell, who was born in Prince Edward County, Va., about 1797. His father, Solomon Mitchell, was born about 1750, and was a soldier in the Revolutionary war, under Baron Steuben and others. Joseph D. Mitchell married, December 29, 1857, Sophia, daughter of John and Julia (Ferguson) Payne, of Monroe County. To them have been born John D., William, Cornelia (Gee), Martha I. (deceased), Smith and George T. John D. Mitchell married, February 5, 1880, Priscilla, daughter of George and Sarah (Coil) Pile, also of Monroe County. To them have been born Gracie and Mittie. Mr. Mitchell started in life with very little assistance, but by industry and economy he has become the owner of a comfortable home, a well improved farm of about forty acres, and a good store well stocked with marketable goods. He has been for three years postmaster at Mt. Herman; is a member of the Baptist Church, and in politics a Democrat.
