His father married, as his second wife, Elizabeth Marshall, by whom two sons and two daughters were born. James T. remained with his father until he was twenty-one years of age, when he commenced life for himself, teaching and farming with success. He married, August 7, 1857, Kittie B. Peden, of Barren County, a daughter of Stephen and Martha (Jones) Peden, who were among the early settlers of Kentucky. Children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Mansfield as follows: Louisa Ann, Amanda Marshall, Lizzie E. Peden, Irena (deceased), William Smith, Mary M. (deceased), Martha J. Williams, of Glasgow, a daughter of Milton R. and Mary (Martin) Williams. Her father was a carriage and wagon manufacturer. To this union two children - Morris and Milton - were born. Mr. Mansfield and wife are members of the Baptist Church; he is a member of the Masonic fraternity. After his first marriage he located on a farm for one year; then purchased a saw-mill, which he ran until after the war. He then spent one year in Illinois; in 1867 he engaged in the mercantile business at Laurel Bluff postoffice; in December, 1879, he located in Fountain Run, where he engaged in farming and building; owns 200 acres adjoining the village; in March, 1885, he engaged in the drug, grocery and notion business. His farm is well improved with fine residence, etc. All his possessions are the result of his industry and economy.
