HOWARD was born March 14, 1847, in Monroe County, where he grew up and has since resided, except one year spent in Illinois and six years in Barren County, Ky. His father, Harman B. Howard, was born December 25, 1818, also in Monroe County. He was a son of Jesse and Lucy (Mayfield) Howard, of North Carolina. Jesse was a son of William Howard, of North Carolina. He was of Irish descent. Harman B. Howard first married, February 13, 1842, Rachel, daughter of Daniel and Martha (Frazier) Payne. To them were born six children: Matilda (Bybee), William (deceased), Smith B., Harman C. and Jesse D. Mrs. Rachel Howard died May 7, 1855. His second marriage took place August 5, 1855, with Canzada, daughter of John and Isabela (Payne) Morehead. To them were born Thomas, Roxana (Willborn), Flem C. (deceased), John A., Roy W., Victoria and Dolly (deceased). Mrs. Canzada Howard departed this life April 6, 1876. His third marriage took place November 13, 1877, with Mary F., daughter of James and Jane (Hope) Hamilton, of Monroe County. To them have been born Lucy M., Ann L. and Bismarck. Smith B. Howard married, March 25, 1879, Kate, daughter of Campbell and Mary (McPherson) Glover. She was born April 19, 1855. To them have been born Hattie (deceased), Cam and Frank. Mr. Howard is the owner of a well improved and productive farm of about 260 acres of land in a fine state of cultivation. In politics he is a Democrat.
