Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 3rd ed., 1886. Monroe County. JOHN G. HOPE was born November 24, 1831, in Greene County, Tenn. At an early age he removed with his parents to Sullivan County, and after six years' residence there he removed to Barren County, Ky., and in 1856 to Monroe County where he now resides. Minor Hope, his father, was born about 1807, also in Greene County, Tenn. He was a son of Isaac Hope, who was a native of Scotland, having emigrated from that country in an early day to North Carolina, and later to Tennessee where he died. Minor Hope was twice married; first, about 1827, to Rebecca, daughter of William and Bethia (Hutchinson) Millborn, also of Green County, Tenn. To their union were born Bethia J. (Hamilton), John G. and Catherine A. (Hamilton). He was next married, about 1838, to Mary Arterburn, of Sullivan County, Tenn., who bore him the following children: Nancy (Vance), Mary (Park), Ellison, Evaline (Waller), Eisophena, William, Greenup, Frances (Watt) and Lindsey. John G. Hope married, January 2, 1855, Amanda, daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth (Payne) White, of Monroe County. She was born December 26, 1837. To them have been born Martha L. (deceased), Elizabth J., James M., Asbury W., Rebecca D., John J., Thomas M., Florence (deceased), Isaac D. and Amanda. Mr. Hope commenced life with no aid, and by his own labor has become the owner of 160 acres of well improved land in an excellent state of cultivation. He is a member of the Christian Church and in politics is a Democrat.
