Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 3rd ed., 1886. Monroe County. FRANCIS M. BUTTON was born February 10, 1845, near Tompkinsville, Ky., and is the tenth of eight sons and five daughters, eight of whom lived to be grown, born to William and Jane (Harvey) Button. William Button was born, about 1802, in Virginia and reared in Kentucky. He died about 1869. Mrs. Jane Button was born and reared in Kentucky, was a daughter of Martin Harvey, of Scotch descent. Mr. Harvey was a farmer and moved to Moronsi in the early settling of the state. [ed..There is no such place listed in KY, perhaps this was a typographical error and meant Monroe]. Francis M. was reared on a farm and received a fair English education. He received most of his education after he became of age. Being of an ambitious turn, and desiring to rank higher than common, attended school at Horse Shoe Cave, Hart County; spent about five years in attending and teaching school; by close application has been enabled to secure a good knowledge of books in general. [ed..There is no such town in Hart County; nor has there been. It is presumed that he meant Horse Cave.] After he quit teaching he engaged in the goods business with his brother at Freedom, Barren County, for six years. In February, 1879, he located in Flippin, and engaged in the mercantile business, which he has continued with success. He has one of the largest stocks of goods in the village; has been deputy postmaster for the past twelve years at Freedom and Flippin. He married, December 29, 1881, Bettie Howard, of Monroe County, daughter of John C. and Nancy (Dunn) Howard. Two children were born by this union: Willie (deceased), and Hallie. Mr. Button is one of the substantial and enterprising merchants in Monroe County, is a Christian gentleman and respected by all who know him.
