Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 3rd ed., 1886. Monroe County. JOHN H. BIGGERSTAFF was born November 10, 1838, in Jackson County (now Clay), Tenn. When very small he removed with his parents to Monroe County, Ky., where he now resides. His father, Hiram Biggerstaff, was born in Monroe County in 1805. He was a son of Samuel Biggerstaff, who was of English descent. Hiram Biggerstaff was three times married; his first wife was Susan, daughter of Ambroce [sic] William. From this union sprang Martha (McComas), Joseph, James A., John H., Mary (Heard), Samuel, America (Cloyd) and Allen. John H. married, in July, 1863, Sarah P., daughter of Lewis E. and Eliza (Hunter) Philpott. To them have been born four sons: J. D., F. W., B. F. and D. W. Mr. Biggerstaff started even with the world, but by industry and economy he has become the owner of 160 acres of good land. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity, a believer in the doctrines of the Christian Church, and in politics is a Democrat.
