Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 3rd ed., 1886. Monroe County. JAMES T. BEALS was born November 14, 1839, near Tompkinsville, Ky. He is the fifth of two sons and seven daughters, eight of whom lived to be grown, born to Isaac and Anna (Pitcock) Beals, who were born and reared in Washington County, Tenn. Isaac Beals was a miller, immigrated to Monroe County in 1834, and settled near Tompkinsville, where he farmed in connection with milling; was a devoted member of the Christian Church, and died November 17, 1882, aged seventy-seven years. He was a son of Joseph Beals, who immigrated to Tennessee from Pennsylvania, where he resided on a farm until death; was one of the earliest settlers of Tennessee; was of Scotch descent and a Quaker in belief. Mrs. Anna Beals was born and reared in east Tennessee, a daughter of John Pitcock, who also came from Pennsylvania to east Tennessee in an early day. He was of English descent, and married Miss Mary Fisher. James T. Beals, who is at present one of the leading merchants of Flippin, was reared on the farm and received a good English education. He remained at home and taught school till October 10, during the fall of 1861, when he enlisted in Company B, Fifth Kentucky Federal Cavalry; was always able and ready for duty, and participated in all engagements with that regiment until January, 1864, when he became disabled and was sent to the hospital at Nashville; before fully recovering he was transferred to the invalid corps - was first sergeant; was discharged in April, 1865, at Nashville, a sergeant. He returned home and attended and taught school the first year, after which he engaged in the mercantile business at Hilham, Tenn., for two years. In November, 1868, he located at Flippin, Monroe County, where he has since been successfully engaged in business; has also an excellent farm of seventy acres, which he has improved. He married, July 24, 1867, Malaha C. McCarrell, of Overton County, Tenn. Five children blessed this union, three of whom are living; Brittania, Donna M. T. and Avo. Mr. Beals and wife are devoted and active members of the Christian Church. He is always one of the foremost men in encouraging enterprises that will promote the interests of his community. In politics he is a Repulican, but cast his first presidential for for S A. Douglas.
