JOHN POPE VANZANT is a native of "the dark and bloody ground," born in 
Metcalfe County, on the 26th of May, 1862.  His father, Milton S. 
Vanzant, is also a native Kentuckian, and now resides on the farm where 
he was born, near Edmonton, in 1834; his life has been spent principally 
in agricultural pursuits, which he has followed with uniform success. He 
married, in the year 1860, Ellen, daughter of Robert and Malinda (Estes) 
Holland, who are of pure English lineage, and born in Maryland and 
Virginia, respectively. They are members of the Baptist Church.  Mr. 
Vanzant was for some time postmaster at Edmonton.  He is a son of Hugh 
and Dicie (Wilson) Vanzant, who were Kentuckians by birth. Hugh Vanzant 
died in 1859, aged sixty-two years.  John P., Albert M., Henry S. and 
Leonara A.  John P. early developed a love for books, and at an early 
age became proficient in mathematics, and well versed in the English 
classics.  At the age of nineteen he engaged in the profession of 
teaching, which he followed for two years with excellent success.  In 
January, 1883, he engaged in the profession of teaching, which he

engaged in the saddle and harness trade at Edmonton, and in July of the 
same year was appointed postmaster at Edmonton, which office he held 
until June, 1885.  At that time he sold the saddle and harness trade and 
soon after took a partnership in the ax helve manufacturing business, 
and also a controlling interest in a milling business, under the firm 
name of Vanzant & Depew, with a capital of $2,000, in stock and 
machinery.  December 2, 1885, Mr. Vanzant married Mollie Eubank, 
daughter of W. E. and Mary Eubank, one of the leading families of 
Edmonton. Politically he is an uncompromising Republican, and lends his 
influence in favor of his friends, but has no political aspirations for 
himself.  He is prompt in business transactions, and is one of the 
rising young business men of Metcalfe County.  In the fall of 1885 Mr. 
Vanzant sold out his ax helve and milling business and is in the 
saddlery trade, to which he has added groceries and hardware.
