Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 3rd ed., 1886. Metcalfe County. HUGH ROBERT VANZANT, M. D., was born in Barren County, Ky., December 19, 1855. He is a son of William and Nancy (Dougherty) Vanzant, natives of Barren County, Ky., and born in 1826 and 1832, respectively. They are the parents of one son, Hugh R., and one daughter, Rachel E. Mrs. Vanzant was a devout Christian, and a member of the Baptist Church; she died in 1873; her husband, William Vanzant, is yet living, aged fifty- nine years; he united with the Presbyterian Church in 1883; he has during life been engaged in agricultural pursuits, with excellent success, and has resided all his life on the farm where he was born. his father, Hugh Vanzant, was of German discent, and born in Kentucky. He married Decie Wilson, of Adair County; she departed this life in 1876. Hugh Vanzant resided in Barren County, Ky., until his death; his father, Garrett Vanzant, was a native of Holland; he came to America and settled in the Virginia colony; he was engaged in the war of the Revolution, in which he held the rank of a captain; he served with Gen. Washington until the close of the war. Hugh R. Vanzant was born and reared on a farm; his early education was obtained in the common schools, where he mastered the ordinary English branches, and became proficient in mathematics. At the age of seventeen he became a student in the Edmonton Male and Female College, where he remained for two years and applied himself diligently to the study of the higher branches of English. In 1876 he began reading for the medical profession, under the direction of Dr. B. F. Taylor, of Bridgeport, Ky., and in 1877 he attended his first course of lectures at the University of Louisville, at Louisville, Ky. Since 1878 he has practiced his profession with uniform success. June 16, 1877, he was united in marriage with Mattie E., daughter of David and Annie Robinson, of Scott County, Ind. They are blessed in their union by the birth of two sons: William D. and Walter S. The Doctor and wife are members of the Presbyterian Church, in which he is a deacon. He is a member of the I. O. G. T., and his influence is for the cause of temperance. Politically he is a Republican. He is a patron of churches and schools, and is known as a generous, public- spirited citizen, and is one of the rising young physicians of the county.
