Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 3rd ed., 1886. Metcalfe County. HENRY C. REID, M. D., was born in Edmonton, Metcalfe Co. Ky., August 9, 1840, and is the fifth in a family of six children born to Thomas and Ann F. (Wren) Reid, the former a native of Madison and the latter of Barren County, Ky. They are of Irish and English descent and were born February 22, 1798, and July 4, 1805, respectively. When an infant, some two or three years old, Thomas Reid came with his parents to Barren (now Metcalfe) County, Ky. Soon after attaining his majority he engaged in flat-boating loads of tobacco down the rivers to New Orleans, usually accomplishing the return journey through the wilderness and on foot. Afterward he engaged in the carding-mill business, in connection with farming, continuing the same for some fifty years. For the past twelve or fifteen years he has lived a retired life. He and his wife were life-long and devoted members of the Old School Presbyterian Chuch, in which church he officiated as ruling elder for many years. He is also an earnest advocate of the temperance cause, having been a member of the Old Washingtonian Society, the Sons of Temperance, the I. O. G. T. and others. His father, James Reid, was a native of Ireland, but when only a lad immigrated to the United States, settling in Virginia. Soon after his marriage he came to Barren County, Ky., where he was among the early pioneers. Mrs. Ann F. Reid departed this life in July, 1874. Her father, Isaac Wren, was born in Virginia in 1777, and was among the early pioneers of Barren County, Ky. Dr. Henry C. Reid received a good English and scientific education in youth at the common schools and academies of the country, and has very materially added to his early training by his own exertions since he became a man. He is a man of excellent general information, having been a diligent and careful reader all his life. From the time he was seventeen till he was twenty-five years old he was employed in his father's carding-mill. He was then employed as deputy county clerk of Metcalfe County and served in that capacity for two years, after which he engaged in the drug trade at Edmonton, continuing the same for some seven or eight years. In 1871 he commenced the study of medicine under the preceptorship of Dr. P. E. Sandidge, of Edmonton. He graduated with high honors from the medical department of the University of Louisville in March, 1875, since which time he has practised [sic] his profession with most abundant success at Edmonton, having secured a large and lucrative business, and is unquestionably one of the leading physicians and surgeons of the county. He first married, January 15, 1866, Eleanora R. Stockton, also a native of Edmonton, Metcalfe Co., Ky., born June 10, 1845, daughter of Joseph B. Sr., and Elina (Parrish) Stockton. Mrs. Reid's death occurred November 1, 1868. She was a devoted member of the Old School Presbyterian Church. The Doctor next married, April 25, 1883, Eudora M. Keel, a native of Bowling Green, Ky., born November 1853. She is a daughter of James F. and Mary J. (Pool) Keel. She is a consistent member of the Old School Presbyterian Church. The Doctor belongs to no church, but is a member of the Masonic fraternity, and has held various official positions in his lodge. In politics he is a Demorat and is one of the prominent and influential citizens of the county, having always taken an active part in its educational interests.
