Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 3rd ed., 1886. Metcalfe County. JOHN C. GIBSON was born in Adair, now Metcalfe County, Ky., in 1847, where he grew to manhood, and now resides. He enlisted, August 16, 1863, in Company G, Thirty-seventh Kentucky Mounted Infantry and on December 29, 1864, received an honorable discharge. He was engaged in several minor battles and did valiant service for his country. He is conscientious in all his dealings, endeavoring to be governed by the golden rule. He married, February 24, 1870, Mrs. Nancy Edwards, daughter of John and Nancy Hensley, who were by birth Virginians, and on their removal from Virginia settled in Barren County, Ky., and remained there during life. John Hensley died in 1874; Nancy Hensley died in 1880. August 14, 1877, Mr. Gibson's left hand was accidentally caught in the cylinder of a threshing machine, which tore and ground it off to the wrist. In 1882 he was elected assessor of Metcalfe County, which position he now holds. He is a member of the Baptist Church, in which he holds the position of deacon. Politically he is a Republican, but gives little attention to politics; his time is given to his business and superintending his farm, which is improved with dwelling, barn and an orchard of choice fruit.
