Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 3rd ed., 1886. Metcalfe County. DR. JAMES B. COLEMAN was born August 15, 1842, near Edmonton, Metcalfe (then Barren) County, Ky. He is the second of four boys and three girls (five now living), born to Benjamin S. and Lydia C. (Wheat) Coleman. Benjamin S. Coleman was born and reared near Edmonton. He was a farmer, and in later years a tanner. His parents, Thomas and Nancy (Shirley) Coleman, are natives of Albemarle County, Va., and immigrated to Kentucky about 1810 or 1812. Thomas Coleman was a wealthy farmer and an extensive slave holder. His father, Thomas, was also a wealthy planter, and owned about 100 negroes. He was a native of Virginia and married a Miss Yates. Mrs. Lydia C. Coleman was born and reared in Adair County, a daughter of Basil Wheat, who married Frances Overstreet. They were natives of Virginia, and came to Adair County about 1800, and were of English descent. James B. Coleman (subject) was reared on the farm, and remained with his parents until his enlistment, August, 1863, in Company G, Thirty-seventh Kentucky Mounted Infantry; was in the engagement at Saltville, Va., and was taken prisoner. He was discharged in February, 1865; returned home and engaged in farming for a short time. In 1867 he resumed the study of medicine, which he had commenced at the age of eighteen. In 1872 he moved to Illinois, where he was engaged in the study and practice. In 1880 he returned to Kentucky, and located at Sulphur Well. He married, in September, 1871, Mary E. M. Hodges, of Metcalfe County, and daughter of Samuel H. and Margaret Hodges. Her parents were natives, respectively, of Green and Barren Counties. The father was a noted minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and a fine scholar. Dr. and Mrs. Coleman are the parents of five children: Lydia C. (deceased), Benjamin S., James C., Leona C., and Basil D. The Doctor and wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. In politics he is a Republican, and cast his first presidential vote for Gen. Hayes.
