Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 3rd ed., 1886. Metcalfe County. REV. MICHAEL PRESTON BRANSTETTER was born in Cumberland (now Metcalfe) County, July 22, 1826. He was a son of John Branstetter, who was born in Virginia about 1790. His father, Frederick Branstetter, was also a Virginian, of German descent. He was a soldier in the Indian war in Missouri. John Branstetter was twice married; first, about 1816, to Katherine, daughter of Matthew and Jane (Fawbush) Amyx. From this union sprang Matthew A., Louisa (Ferguson), Rev. Michael P., Mary E. (Leamon), Madison J. (deceased), Katherine S. (Bobbitt) and John L. Mrs. Katherine Branstetter died in 1840. His second marriage took place about 1848, to Mrs. Betsey (Tudor) Huffman. They had no children. Rev. Mr. Branstetter was married, in October, 1852 to Mary, daughter of Josiah and Minerva (Palmore) Smith. To them have been born Jacob G., Joseph M. (deceased), Martha E. (Smith), John A., Louisa, Birche and Lemuel. Mr. Branstetter has a fair elementary English education, and is a man well posted on current topics. Entirely by his own labor, and in spite of spending a large part of his time for the benefit of others, he has become the owner of about sixty-one acres of well improved and productive land. He has been since 1850 a consistent member of the Methodist Church, and since 1858 has given a large portion of each year to the ministry (in a local capacity) of the gospel. He has ministered to the dying and probably attended and officiated at more funerals than any other man in this section of the country. He is a self-made man; in politics is an independent Republican, and votes for the man rather than the party.
