Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 3rd ed., 1886. Metcalfe County. SEBASTIAN C. BELL was born April 22, 1821, in Adair County, Ky. At the age of nine years he removed to a farm on the Columbia and Burkesville Road; and after a few years' residence there returned to the old homestead, which he subsequently purchased, and on which two of his sons now reside. From there he removed to his present residence on the waters of Little Barren River, two miles west of Edmonton. His father, John Bell, was born August 5, 1788, in Rockbridge County, Va.; was a soldier in the various Indian wars of his time, and was of Scotch-Irish descent. John Bell, the father of our subject, was twice married; first, about 1820, to Elizabeth, daughter of Jesse and Mildred (Crawley) Somers, also of Adair County. They were blessed with two sons: Sebastian C. and William W. His second marriage occurred about 1828, with Elizabeth McDonald. They had three children: John, Joseph R. and Nancy (Leftwich). Sebastian C. was married December 17, 1840, to Amanda, daughter of Thomas and Sarah (Overton) Row. She was born July 14, 1821. To them have been born Nathaniel G., Alice E. (Hamilton), Elhanon W., Sarah M. (Scott), Sebastian C., Jr., Amanda M. (Pursley), Almeda K. (Pursley), and Joshua F. By industry and frugality Mr. Bell has become the owner of (including that settled on [by] his children) about 1,500 acres of well improved and productive land. He has been a major on staff duty, and has represented his district for two sessions in the Legislature of his native State. He is a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and of the Masoinic fraternity, and in politics is a Democrat.
