Used by permission. [McLean] EBENEZER HISE MADDOX: Few men have been more conspiciuous [sic] in the church life among the Baptists of this section than Elder E. H. Maddox. He was born in Ohio County, January 10, 1842. He was born again when a boy and united with the West Providence Baptist Church in his native county. He was baptized by Elder J. F. Austin. On being licensed to preach in 1867, by West Providence Church, he entered Bethel College and studied there until the latter part of 1869. He was ordained by Greenville Church in 1874. From first to last he pastored the following churches: Greenville, 1874-1875; Rolling Fork, 1876-1877; Union Band, 1877; Cedar Creek, 1877; Hillsboro, 1879; Doctor's Fork, 1879; Forks Dix River, 1879; New Gasper, 1882-1883; Barren River, 1883; Paradise, 1884 West Providence, 1884; Goshen, 1885-1886; Fordsville, 1886-1887; Calhoun, 1888-1890; Curdsville, 1888; New Hope, 1890-1893 and 1898; Sandy Hill, 1892-1895; Spottsville, 1894; Bethel, 1892-1900; Chestnut Grove, 1893-1899; Delaware Creek, 1895-1896; South Carrollton, 1889; Olaton, 1897; Stanley, 1900-1903; Zion, 1901; Sugar Grove, 1903-1905; Green River, 1903-1905 and 1911; Mt. Pleasant, 1909; Rumsey, 1909; Central Grove, 1909-1910; Assistant to pastor at Third Church 1900-1904. Bro. Maddox preached the annual sermon before this Association in 1901. He was elected to succeed the aged and venerable J. S. Coleman as Moderator in the year 1902, and again in 1903. He was an excellent preacher and pastor; his life was a sermon, he lived his religion. He was twice married, first to Miss Mattie Stallard, who only lived a few months; second to Miss Lola Lockett, of Calhoun, Kentucky. His second wife still lives, at Louisville, Ky., (1943). No children were born to either union. Bro. Maddox departed this life on December 16, 1917, and his remains were laid to rest in the Livermore cemetery.
