"A HISTORY OF THE DAVIESS-McLEAN BAPTIST ASSOCIATION IN KENTUCKY, 1844-1943" by Wendell H. Rone. Probably published in 1944 by Messenger Job Printing Co., Inc., Owensboro, Kentucky, pp. 462-463. Used by permission. [McLean] HOLLIS WATTERSON HOWELL: Hollis W. Howell was for many years one of the faithful members of the Island Baptist Church. He was born in Island, McLean County, Kentucky, on November 13, 1893, and was the son of James E. and Hallie Eaton Howell. He attended the grade schools at hand, the Utica High School, Owensboro Business College, and Bethel College, Russellville, Kentucky. He professed faith in his youth and united with the Island Church being baptized by Rev. H. P. Brown. This was about the year 1905. He remained a member of this Church until his death. In that time he served the Church as Moderator, Treasurer, Sunday School Superintendent, and as a Sunday School Teacher. No Church ever had a more consecrated and loyal leader than Hollis W. Howell. He was the messenger from this Church to the Association on many occasions and also served on the Executive Mission Board. He married Miss Lula Kirtley on November 29, 1913. Two sons and one daughter blessed this union. One son preceded him in death. He died as the result of an accident on March 13, 1942. Thus the brief life of this tactful, noble Christian man came to an untimely end. He was a good man and his influence and life counted for Christ.
