"A HISTORY OF THE DAVIESS-McLEAN BAPTIST ASSOCIATION IN KENTUCKY, 1844-1943" by Wendell H. Rone. Probably published in 1944 by Messenger Job Printing Co., Inc., Owensboro, Kentucky, p. 313. Used by permission. [McLean] LUTHER PEAY DRAKE: Elder Luther Peay Drake, the subject of this sketch, was born in McLean County, Kentucky, near Sacramento, on December 28, 1860. His parents were Samuel P. Drake and Mary Ellen Nall Drake. In early life he was converted and baptized into the fellowship of the Island Baptist Church by the renowned Dr. W. P. Bennett. By this same Church he was licensed to preach in March, 1890, and was ordained in September, 1892. Elder Drake's education was secured from West Kentucky College at South Carrollton and Bethel College at Russellville. He also spent some time studying at the Southern Seminary in Louisville. Prior to his entering the ministry he followed the occupation of a merchant in Livermore, Kentucky. The Island Church called Brother Drake as pastor immediately after his ordination where he continued to serve until 1898. Besides this Church he also served Walton's Creek, 1902-1906; Render, 1905; Pond Run, 1906-1907; Concord, 1907; all in Ohio County; Mt. Pleasant, 1900; Richland, 1903-1905; Basin, 1907; all in McLean County; and Green River, 1901, in Daviess County. West Providence Church, also in Ohio County, enjoyed his ministerial labors from 1902 through 1905. It is known also that he served churches in other counties but our records are incomplete. Brother Drake preached the Annual Sermon before the Ohio County Association in 1905 and served as clerk of the same body in 1901-1907. While in the midst of usefulness he was cut off from the land of the living, his death occurring on July 6, 1911. His remains were laid to rest in the Island cemetery. He had made his home in Island for many years with the exception of a few years in Ohio County. Elder Drake was first married to Miss Eliza Howell in 1885. After her death in 1888, he married Miss Mary Rena Shacklett in 1898. She too, died in the year 1907. His third marriage was to Miss Nancy B. Philpot in 1909. Two children were born to the first marriage and three to the second marriage. There were no children born to the third marriage. After the death of his second wife Brother Drake went to the State of Kansas and labored as a Home Missionary for some time. In this work he was successful to a great degree in organizing a number of new churches and strengthening old ones. We regret that the particulars of his life have been so meager. From all reports he was a good minister of Jesus Christ. He is a brother of F. E. Drake of Owensboro, Ky., and the father of Mrs. Bertha Schermer, of the same city.
