Used by permission. [McLean] DEACON WALTER ATHERTON: The subject of this sketch first saw the light of day on March 29, 1875, and was born on a farm near Livermore, Kentucky, in McLean County. His father was Aaron F. Atherton and his mother was Miss Mary A. Simmons before her marriage. He was reared on a farm and attended the country schools at hand. He also attended the Livermore schools. During most of his life he has engaged in farming and also as a tobacco buyer, the mercantile business, and the lumber business. He was converted while attending a meeting at the Pleasant Hill Methodist Church at the age of thirteen. He gave his membership to Buck Creek Baptist Church and was baptized by Rev. B. F. Jenkins. On April 29, 1900, he was ordained as a deacon by the Buck Creek Church. After holding membership with the Third Baptist Church in Owensboro for a few years he moved to Livermore about 1912 and his membership has been with the Church there since that date. In that time he has served as the Choir Director, Sunday School Superintendent, and as a deacon of the Church. He has also been a Trustee of the Church property. In the meantime he has served as a messenger to the Assocaition [sic] from his Church on several occasions in the past forty-five years. He served as Treasurer of the Mission Board in 1910. He was married to Miss Cora S. Settle on February 8, 1899, and they have four children. Mr. Atherton has meant a lot to the Livermore Church and rendered especial aid in the erection of the present house of worship in the period 1919-1921. He has been in the lumber business in Livermore for a number of years to date. During the periods of depression and division that the Livermore Church has gone through he rendered a service that has helped the Church to maintain her sphere of usefulness in the cause of the Kingdom.
