Kentucky: A History of the State, Perrin, Battle, Kniffin, 4th ed., 1887, Marion County. HON. JAMES M. FOGLE (deceased), one of the brightest legal luminaries of his day, was born in Lebanon, Ky., in 1820. He received his literary education at St. Mary's College, studied law with Rowan Hardin, and came to the bar at the age of twenty. In 1841 he formed a law partnership with R. H. Rowntree, which continued until his death in 1871. Mr. Fogle was an able advocate, and one of the finest orators of the Kentucky bar. He served as elector for Pierce in the year 1852, and served as presidential elector again in 1856, also represented Marion County in the State Legislature during the session of 1855-56. In May, 1846, he was married to Miss Mary, daughter of John W. Davis, of Mercer County, Ky. She died in 1859, leaving four children, viz: John D., William P., Martha B. (Grundy), and Betty P. (Allen). His second marriage was to Miss Melissa Lawrence, who died in 1871. This union resulted in the birth of two children, both of whom died in childhood. John D. Fogle, the eldest of the sons of James M. and Mary Fogle, and one of the ablest lawyers of the present bar of Lebanon, Ky., was born in 1847, educated at St. Mary's College, and having decided on the profession of law, entered the law office of Rowntree & Fogle, with whom he performed the usual preparatory reading. He then pursued his legal study in the Harvard University of Cambridge, Mass., and was admitted to practice in January, 1868, since which date he has been a member of the Lebanon bar. From 1868 to 1872 he served as school commissioner of his county; in 1876 was assistant elector for the State at large on the Tilden and Hendricks ticket, and in 1881 was elected to the State Senate to represent the Fifteenth Senatorial District, serving acceptably for four years. In 1866 he married Miss Fannie Beard, daughter of Dr. J. J. Beard, of Adair County. She died in 1884. Mary Fogle is their only child.
