Kentucky: A History of the State, Perrin, Battle, Kniffin, 4th ed., 1887, Marion County. URIAH COPPAGE. Prominent among the venerable citizens of Marion is the worthy gentleman whose name heads this sketch. He was born in what is now Washington County, April 19, 1813. His father, James Coppage, was a native of Virginia and was born April 5, 1763. He came with a brother, William, to Kentucky when a young man. The country where they settled, on Rolling Fork River, was an unbroken forest and the Indians were very troublesome. The brother of James was shot by an Indian; he survived, however, and afterward removed to Missouri. James continued to reside in Kentucky, and married Nancy O'Bannon. They reared a family of eight children, of whom are living, Uriah and Rhoda, the widow of Stewart Tapscott, who resided in Casey County and was killed by a falling tree. Nancy (O'Bannon) Coppage died in 1841; her parents were of Irish parentage, natives of Virginia, came early to Kentucky, and settled on Rolling Fork River, in which stream the father of Nancy O'Bannon was drowned. Moses Coppage, the father of James, was an Englishman and a citizen of the Virginia colony. Uriah Coppage had but little school training; his education being almost entirely practical; his vocation through life has been that of a farmer; he has been uniformly successful in his business operations, and has resided all his life on the farm where he was born. He is the proprietor of 300 acres of farming land, has been a man of energy and perseverance, and has followed his vocation with the zeal that brings success, and now in his declining years is able to live in comfortable circumstances. His wife was a Miss Margaret Mann; they were married July 25, 1833, and are the parents of twelve children, eleven of whom are living, viz: James, Elizabeth, Stephen, Joseph, Hardin, Lucinda, Ellen, Moses, Killis, Mollie and Maggie. Margaret Mann was born near the Kentucky River in 1815; her parents, Joseph and Elizabeth (Hill) Mann, were Virginians by birth and natives of Green County, Mr. and Mrs. Coppage are members of the Christian Church. His political views are Democratic. Coppage O'Bannon Tapscott Hill Mann = Casey-KY Green-KY Washington-KY VA MO http://www.rootsweb.com/~kygenweb/kybiog/marion/coppage.u.txt
