Kentucky: A History of the State, Perrin, Battle, Kniffin, 4th ed., 1887, Marion County. HUGH P. COOPER, attorney at law, of the Lebanon bar, is a son of Philip B. and Cordelia (Smith) Cooper. Philip B. was one of four children born to Basil P. and Mary (Quinley) Cooper, and was born in Baltimore, Md., in 1803. When about nineteen years old he came to Kentucky, and was here employed as a traveling salesman. He removed to Lebanon in 1838, and for a number of years was variously employed as trader and speculator, also filling the office of master commissioner of Marion County for a period of eight years. From Lebanon he removed to a farm on Rolling Fork, where he passed the remainder of his life, which terminated November 16, 1884. His wife, Cordelia Smith, was the daughter of Samuel and Cordelia (Hamilton) Smith, and was born in Marion County, Ky., in 1809. She died on the 3d of September, 1873. Their children are Benjamin J., Samuel S., Thomas J., Walter H., Hugh P., Mary E. (Craycroft), Josie E. (Kindred), deceased, and ELizabeth E. (Spalding). Hugh P. Cooper was born on the 25th of March, 1861, and was educated in Columbia College, Notre Dame, Ind., and St. Mary's College, graduating from the latter institution in 1881. In connection with his collegiate studies he pursued a thorough course of law study, and came to the bar in 1882. Though young in the legal profession, he enjoys an enviable local reputation, is the efficient attorney for the city of Lebanon, and bids fair to take a leading rank among the lawyers of Kentucky.
