Kentucky: A History of the State, Perrin, Battle, Kniffin, 4th ed., 1887, Marion County. THOMAS W. CECIL was born August 2, 1826. His father, Sylvester Cecil, was a native of Marion (at the time of his birth Washington) County, and married Hedric Medley, by whom he had three children: Thomas W., Ignatius C. and Annie S. Augustine Cecil, paternal grandfather, was born in St. Mary's County, Md., where his marriage to Miss Frances Hammit took place; he came to Kentucky by way of the Ohio River on a flatboat, leaving the river at the place where Louisville now stands, when there were but two or three dwellings within what are now the city limits. He settled on Pottinger's Creek in Washington County, where he resided until his death. Ignatius Medley, maternal grandfather of T. W. Cecil, was also a native of St. Mary's County, Md.; in immigrating to Washington County, he came through Lexington, where for about three years he worked as a house carpenter, and laid the first tongue-and-groove floor ever put down in Lexington. Upon locating in Washington County he married Sarah, a daughter of Harry Boone, and purchased a tract of land on Hardin's Creek known as the Rice Survey, upon which land he erected the first copper still ever operated in Washington County. Both paternal and maternal ancestors were members of the Catholic Church, to which all their descendants belong. Sylvester Cecil died in 1833, comparatively a young man, of cholera; his wife had died the December previous, thus leaving their children orphans, who were reared by their grandparents, the Medleys. Thomas W., who was born on Hardin's Creek, Marion County, remained with them on the farm until he attained the age of twenty-three years, receiving a limited education. He has made farming his principal life occupation, but formerly distilled liquor. September 17, 1848, his marriage with Roselle Riney was solemnized and to their union nine children have been born, of which eight are living: Sarah E., wife of James Burs; Frances M.; Elizabeth.; Mary F. (now Mrs. George Thompson); Mattie I.; Clement S.; Annie S. and Ignatius C.
