Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 4th ed., 1887 Marion Co. GEORGE A. BRICKEN, dealer in grain, seeds and implements, Lebanon, was born in Marion County May 16, 1841. His father, William M. Bricken, was born in Washington County in 1817. He married Miss Ellen Cunningham and two sons blessed this union, George A. and Samuel B. Ellen (Cunningham) Bricken is yet living, aged sixty-three years. She is a daughter of Robert and Nancy (Beale) Cunningham, who were of Scotch parentage and natives of Maryland and came to Kentucky in 1796, and located near the site of the present city of Lebanon. Wm. M. Bricken was, during life, engaged chiefly in the grocery trade in connection with farming. He was the first assessor of property elected in the town of Lebanon; he died in 1865. He was a son of Wm. G. Bricken, a native of Virginia born near Richmond, where he grew to manhood and married a Miss Hardwick; afterward (in 1797) he came to Kentucky and settled in Washington County, where he purchased land and engaged in farming, which vocation he followed until his death; he reared a family of three sons and five daughters, among whom was Wm. M., the youngest, and father of our subject. They have been a remarkably long-lived family, two sons and one daughter having died upward of eighty years of age each. Those living are Mrs. E. R. Terrell, Mrs. Martha Johnson, Alexander, Mrs. Maria Spraggins, and Mrs. Mahala Wilkinson. George A. Bricken was reared on a farm and educated in the common schools, finishing at the Lebanon Institute under the tuition of W.T. Knott. In 1859 he engaged in the trade with his father in the grocery business, and afterward in the shoe trade until 1870, when he engaged in agricultural pursuits on a farm of 150 acres, that he owned. In 1881 he connected with his farming operations the trade in seeds, grain and farming implements in the town of Lebanon. June 11, 1867, he was united in marriage with Miss Elizabeth V. Johnson. Three sons and two daughters have blessed this union: Wm. M., Felix J., Rosella, Blanche, and George A. Mrs. Elizabeth Bricken was born in 1846. She is a daughter of Felix and Rosetta (Medley) Johnson; both were native Kentuckians of Irish descent, and residents of Washington County. Mrs. Bricken is a member of the Catholic Church. Mr. Bricken is not a member of the church but is a patron of church and school. His political views are Democratic.
