"A HISTORY OF THE DAVIESS-McLEAN BAPTIST ASSOCIATION IN KENTUCKY, 1844-1943" by Wendell H. Rone. Probably published in 1944 by Messenger Job Printing Co., Inc., Owensboro, Kentucky, pp. 392-393. Used by permission. [Madison] JAMES EDWIN HEWLETT: This successful minister of the Gospel is the son of Roy G. and Julia Wells Hewlett and was born in Cross County Arkansas, on January 3, 1912. He first made a profession of faith at the age of ten years and was baptized into the fellowship of the First Baptist Church, Greenwood, Mississippi. While a student in Missisippi [sic] College, at Clinton, Misissippi [sic], he became convinced of the fact that he had not had a genuine experience of the saving grace of God and in consequence he fully surrendered his heart and life to Christ and was baptized into the fellowship of the Wayside Baptist Church, near Charleston, Mississippi, by his uncle, Rev. J. R. G. Hewlett. His surrender to preach the Gospel came immediately after his conversion. Our brother attended the common schools at Colt, Arkansas, and at Lena, Mississippi. He graduated from high school at Greenwood, Mississippi, and also received the A.B. Degree from Mississippi College, Clinton, Mississippi. He received the Master of Theology Degree from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky, in May, 1937. Our subject was licensed to preach by the Clinton Baptist Church Clinton, Miss., in the year 1931, and was ordained to the ministry by the First Baptist Church, Greenwood, Miss., in 1933. Revs. J. R. G. Hewlett, Edwin J. Caswell, and Madison Flowers served on the ordaining council. He became pastor of the Seven Hills Baptist Church, Owensboro, Kentucky, in May, 1936, and remained until February, 1939, when he resigned to accept the care of the First Baptist Church, Richmond, Kentucky, where he still labors. While in this Association he preached the annual sermon in 1938. The Seven Hills pastorate saw the Church membership grow from 175 to 300 and the membership became obsessed with the Bible plan of stewardship to such an extent that at one time there were about 200 tithers in the Church. This greatly helped the Church to become self sustaining and may account for the unusually large financial growth of this Church during the past seven years. In the summer months while he was out of school on vacation our brother served as an evangelist. He organized the Pharsalia Baptist Church, near Pope, Mississippi, after preaching three weeks in a revival meeting which saw almost fifty persons make profession of faith in Christ. On August 17, 1937, our brother was united in marriage to Miss Mildred Robertson, the talented daughter of Dr. and Mrs. O. C. Robertson, who was a teacher of music in the Owensboro Schools at the time. They were married in the Third Baptist Church auditorium by the pastor, Rev. A. F. Cagle, and one of the largest crowds ever assembled in the city witnessed the ceremony. They have two children, one daughter and one son, ages 4 and 2 respectively. Brother Hewlett has had a successful pastorate at Richmond, in Madison County, Kentucky, and only recently he led the Dry forces of that County in gaining an impressive victory in a local option election which outlawed the sale of intoxicating beverages. Our brother is a painstaking and determined worker and seldom fails to achieve his plans when once formed. This spirit of determination has been helpful in his ministerial life.
