A History of Masonry in Madison County, Kentucky 1812-1913, compiled and written by Robert R. Burnam, 1914, p. 89. ROBERT RODES BURNAM, the sixty third Master of Richmond Lodge No. 25, has the distinction of being the only Master of whom it can be said that both his father and grandfather had filled the same station. His father, Curtis F. Burnam, served the Lodge as Master twice, while his grandfather was the Master U. D. Mr. Burnam was born November 17, 1858. He was prepared for college at the old Seminary and entered the Freshman Class of Central University the year it was established in Richmond, 1874. He graduated in 1878. He then went to Yale College and spent two years in the Graduate School. On returning from college he was offered and accepted a position in the Farmers National Bank. This occupation, banking, has been his life work. He was made a Mason July 13, 1880, passed August 10, 1880, raised September 14, 1880. Was elected Secretary of his Lodge December 16, 1880, serving two years. He was elected Master December 26, 1886, and reelected just twenty years later, December 27, 1905. Was elected Grand Junior Warden of the Grand Lodge October, 1907, and advanced steadily until October, 1910 when he was elected Grand Master. He received the Capitular degrees in Richmond Chapter during the Autumn of 1880. Was elected High Priest first September, 1883, again in 1896. He was elected Grand Scribe of the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons October, 1900, and became the Grand High Priest in 1902. He was Knighted in Richmond Commandery December, 1881. Was elected Eminent Commander first in 1893, and has been reelected four times, a record equaled by few in the history of the subordinate Commanderies of the State. On the death of John Speed Smith, Jr., February, 1900, he was appointed by the Grand Commander, Eminent Sir James T. Hedges, to the station left vacant by the death of that distinguished Master. When the Grand Commandery met the following May, Sir Burnam was elected Grand Junior Warden and advanced step by step until he was in 1904 at Frankfort made the Grand Commander. Ordained as High Priest October, 1883. Thus it will appear that Mr. Burnam has had all the honors given him possible by the York Rite bodies of his native State. His wish frequently expressed is that he has to some degree, by his life, his labor and love for the craft, merited these distinctions. Mr. Burnam married Miss Cynthia Williams, the daughter of Honorable William B. Smith, in 1886. Their union has been blessed with three sons and a daughter, all of whom are living. It may also be noted that subject of the foregoing sketch was the sixth Grand Master furnished to the Grand Lodge of Kentucky by No. 25. Mr. Burnam has been for years an Elder in the First Presbyterian Church of Richmond, of which his grandmother, wife of Anthony W. Rollins, was one of the original thirteen members.
