A History of Masonry in Madison County, Kentucky 1812-1913, compiled and written by Robert R. Burnam, 1914, p. 108. EDWARD DOUGLASS BALLARD, was born in Richmond November 28, 1840. His father, John B. Ballard, was one of Madison County's pioneers and lived to be a very old man. He was a farmer and a gentleman of property. Hospitable and a favorite with his neighbors and friends. His wife was Miss Karr. The subject of this sketch moved to Missouri in 1858 where he lived for fifteen years. He was married there in 1873 to Miss Swaney, and then at the urgent desire of his aged father returned to Kentucky. For many years he was a successful farmer and stock man. Finding the cares of farm life too strenuous in the disorganized condition of labor he sold his farm and moved into Richmond where he has since resided. Mr. Ballard received the degrees of Ancient Craft Masonry in 1876. He has served the Lodge as Steward and Tyler for nearly twenty consecutive years. He passed through the Chapter also in 1876 and has served as Captain of the Guard for sixteen years. He was Knighted in 1876 and has been Captain of the Guard for fifteen years. Thus it will be seen that for faithful service in the various branches of the Order none have surpassed him. His name and appearance are almost suggestive of the Order. His attention to details, so necessary, has rendered his service almost invaluable. He is popular, courteous, kind. Mr Ballard is a gentleman of means and for years was a director of the State Bank & Trust Company. He has served many times as a member of the City Council. Long may he continue to live among us.
