Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, Edition 8-B Lewis Co. WILLIAM W. AGNEW was born in Iowa in 1838, and is the second son of Samuel C. and Jane (Wilson) Agnew. Samuel C. Agnew was born October 17, 1804, in Brooke County, Va. He was raised a farmer, and about the second year after his marriage he moved to Burlington, Iowa, where he engaged in the real estate business, at one time owning the entire village of Burlington. After remaining there four years he returned to West Virginia, and in the fall of 1846 moved to Lewis County, Ky., where he resumed farming. He was an active Democrat, holding, however, only the office of magistrate. He was the father of six children, and died in Vanceburg in 1883. His father, John Agnew, was a native of Beaver County, Pa., was a farmer by occupation, and a Soldier in the war of the Revolution; he afterward removed to Brooke County, Va., where he lived until his death. Samuel Wilson, the maternal grandfather of our subject, a native of Ireland, came to America when a young man and located in Brooke County, Va., He was a weaver by trade, although after coming to America he engaged in farming. He was thrice married, the mother of our subject being the second child by his second wife. He died on his plantation in Brooke County, in 1838. William W. Agnew was reared and educated in Lewis County, Ky., and began life by clerking in a general store. In 1866 he commenced the mercantile business on his own account in Vanceburg. In 1873 he married Miss Sina Truitt, a daughter of George Truitt of Lewis County. He became the father of five children, viz., Mary E., Elma I., Berenice, George W. and Sallie. Mr. Agnew is at present the senior member of the firm of Agnew & Shump, as well as the owner of fine farming lands in Lewis County. He is a Mason and a prominent factor in the Democratic politics of Lewis County.
