Dr. John J. Dickey Diary, Fleming County, Ky. Recorded in the 1870's and beyond. Reprinted in Kentucky Explorer, Volume 11, No 3 - August, 1996, p. 105. By permission. Letcher County. Henry Duff I knew William Smith who lived on Carr's Fork a litle above the mouth of Saishman. He said he was raised with General Jackson, had wrestled with him many times. The Stampers of Lee and Wolfe came from Letcher. My father, John Duff, was born in 1800. He and my Uncle Henry taught school. Henry taught on Cutshin. Had a big fight with the Lewises for whipping a boy. Captain William Strong's widow has the family record of Old William Strong, and it will tell where his children were born. Edward and William were born in Virginia. This will help to fix dates. I think the Eversoles were in the "Cattle War" on the Strongs' side; Also Jesse Bolling and the Clay County Bollings on the Amis side. The Strongs sent to Prestonburg for General White of that place, it was not General White of Goose Creek. I am sure the Strongs appealed to the Governor for arms and ammunition, and the Governor asked White to help or gave him authority to help them. I am sure that there were a great many men engaged in it. I have heard the old people talk of this time and again.
