Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, ed. 8-B Lawrence County GEORGE S. RICHARDSON was born in Boston, Mass., June 5, 1829, the son of Bill and Elizabeth (Badger) Richardson, both born near the city named, and whose ancestors came from England to America over two hundred years ago, the male members taking part in the war of the Revolution. George S. Richardson was educated at the city schools. He began his business life as agent for the manufacturers of a furnace for heating and ventilating purposes, and for eighteen years was engaged in placing it on the markets of Boston, New York and Milwaukee. In 1865 he came to the Big Sandy River, Ky., in search of oil, which he found. He then took a lease of Peach Orchard coal property, built barges, and for two years run coal to Cincinnati. Finding there was money to be made in the coal trade, he conceived the idea of building the Chattaroi Railway, and about 1868 began the task of soliciting subscriptions for the purpose. The financial panic of 1873 interfered temporarily with the work, but in 1880 the road was begun, and was completed in 1882 from Ashland to Richardson, the latter village being named in honor of our subject, who is vice-president and general manager of the road, which will be extended up the valley. He is also general manager of the Great Western Mining and Manufacturing Company at Peach Orchard. In 1854 Mr. Richardson married Miss Mary Elizabeth Hosoa, of Boston, who died in 1864, the mother of two children, Emily S. and George L. Mr. Richardson still remains a widower.
