Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, ed. 8-B Lawrence County JAY H. NORTHUP is a native of Granville, Washington County, N.Y., was born January 5, 1843, and is a son of Ephraim and Elmina (Hicks) Northup, of the same county and State, and both of English descent. The settlement of the Northup family can be traced to the year 1636 in Rhode Island, and one of the ancestors of our subject was a signer of the original compact between the colonies. Jay H. Northup was reared on the home farm and received his education at the common schools, but was sufficiently well trained to follow teaching himself. In October, 1861, he enlisted in the Ninety-third New York Infantry, and a year and a half later was promoted to the rank of Second Lieutenant; then rose to be First Lieutenant, Captain and Major, and July 17, 1865, was mustered out as Lieutenant Colonel. In the fall of the latter year he came to Kentucky and located at Louisa. He was one of the projectors of the Chattaroi road, which was begun in 1879, was a director in 1881, and became receiver in 1885, which position he still fills. March 11, 1867, he married Miss Emily E., Wood, of Hartford, Washington County, N.Y., and is now the father of four children. In 1885 and 1886 the Colonel was chairman of the State Board of Equalization. Northup Hicks Wood = Washington-NY http://www.rootsweb.com/~kygenweb/kybiog/lawrence/northup.jh.txt
