Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 3rd ed., 1885, Larue Co. PROF. JOHN T. COAKLEY was born June 4, 1851, in Green County, Ky., and is a son of George and Martha J. (Durham) Coakley, to whom four sons and one daughter were born. George Coakley was born in Green County, and was a farmer, and a flat-boat man from Greensburg to New Orleans. He also owned slave property. He is a son of Daniel Coakley, who married a Carter. Mrs. Martha Coakley was born in Taylor County, and is a daughter of Samuel Durham, who was born in Green County, and married Margaret Mayes. Mr. Durham was a farmer and miller; flat-boated in an early day, and was a magistrate for several terms. He was born in Green, now Taylor County, and was a son of Maj. James Durham, who immigrated from Virginia, was a soldier in the war of 1812, served two terms in the Legislature, was one of the early representatives of Green County, and was of English descent; his grandfather, Samuel, was a soldier of the Revolution. Prof. Coakley was reared on a farm, was educated at Centre and Bethel Colleges, and at the age of seventeen taught his first school in La Rue [sic] County. He taught in the common schools of Green County until 1871. Through his efforts there has been erected a fine school building at Science Hill, which he had charge of for five years. He was one year at Union Hall; one year and a half at Greensburg, and thence went to Texas, Washington County, where he remained one year and a half, then took charge of East Lynn College, at Buffalo, La Rue County, where he has since been engaged. Prof. Coakley was married in December, 1881, to Lizzie B. Gaddie, daughter of John G. and Margaret Ann (Willett) Gaddie, natives, respectively, of Taylor and Nelson Counties. John G. Gaddie was a substantial and prosperous farmer and owner of considerable slave property, and was a son of George Gaddie, who was a carpenter and farmer. He married Mary Durrett, of Virginia. Prof. Coakley and wife have one child, Anne Bion. They are both members of the Baptist Church. In politics he is a Democrat, and cast his first presidential vote for Greeley in 1872.
