Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, ed. 8-B, Knox County Silas B. Dishman, attorney-at-law, was born in Barboursville, Knox County, KY, March 27, 1856. His father, John Dishman, a native of Virginia, was born about 1822, came to Kentucky when a boy and was brought up in Woodford County; He commenced the study of law when young at Lexington, and was admitted to the bar at that place. He afterward practiced his profession at Nicholasville and Richmond, KY, and located at Barboursville before the war, and is the oldest member of that bar. He served at one time as commonwealth’s attorney of his district in eastern Kentucky; he was also a soldier in the Mexican war. His wife was Jane (Atchison) Dishman, a native of Lexington, and they were the parents of ten children, viz: Louisa, Ellen E., James H., Laura, S.B., Carrie, Maggie, Lillie, Virginia and Nannie. Silas B. Dishman was educated at Tusculum College. In 1876 he commenced the study of law and the following year graduated from the Central University, Richmond, KY, at which place he was admitted to the bar. He soon afterward moved to Whitesburg, KY, where he practiced his profession until 1883 and then located at Barboursville, Knox County. July 18, 1878, he married Miss Annie Hinkle, a daughter of Anthony and Sallie Hinkle, of Knox County. They have five children, viz: john B., Edward B., Laura, William McG. And Ben.
