Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, ed. 8-B Johnson County DR. H.F. STRONG was born in Scott County, Va., May 28, 1819, a son of Thomas and Annie (Fields) Strong, natives of North Carolina. Thomas Strong removed to Virginia in 1800, where he was a farmer, served as magistrate, and died. William Strong, grandfather of our subject, came to America in the "Mayflower" with his brother Phillip, who held an office under the king. William was a farmer and was killed in a battle in North Carolina; his wife was Mary (Webster) Strong, a sister of Daniel Webster. The maternal grandparents of H.F. Strong were, John and Mary (Scales) Fields, natives respectively, of North Carolina and Massachusetts. John Fields, a farmer, took part in the war and was wounded in battle at Gilford Court House, N.C. H.F. Strong was educated in the University of Virginia and graduated in 1840. He studied medicine at Estillville, Va., under Dr. Thorn, and began practice at that place in 1841. In 1847 he removed to Johnson County, Ky., where in connection with his practice he engaged in farming, and owns 300 acres of land. In 1841 Dr. Strong married Phoebe J. Godsey, of Virginia, who died in 1868, leaving five children, all now deceased. Dr. Strong next married in 1871, Nancy Preston, of Johnson County, who departed this life in 1874. The Doctor is a member of the Masonic fraternity, and is politically a Democrat.
